Well, it was a disappointing week for me on the Hampshire Avon this year. This was the sixth year we’ve been down there for the start of the season and while, yet again, the beauty of the river and the New Forest are what stand out, it would have been nice to catch just one barbel. Never mind; it was fantastic just being there. The owners of the farm are lovely people, the farm itself is stunning: the hay and water-meadows, the wildlife, and the weather was stunning too. As a slight consolation I did manage to see one barbel on the bank which Matthew caught. As are all the fish we’ve caught here it was a stunner as you can see; 13.8lb. I’m convinced there’s a river record in this stretch; the average size of the fish is quite amazing.
